Pick of the Pix Series, The Art of Seconding

Lens 85.0mm, 1/320s, f/1.8, ISO: 1600

Lou Black seconds Christine Young at the Oceanias in March 2008.

I've always been quite fascinated with capturing the intense interaction between the person coaching and the competitor in sparring events. It's photographically challenging too as you have to be cheeky enough to get in close and often go out onto the ring between rounds. The break between rounds is over in a flash and I find that there's usually only a few seconds where the coach is talking to the competitor, they're eyes are engaged, and there is potential for a good strong picture full of intensity.

In the image above I've focused on Lou intensely watching Christine's match as a nice image to accompany the first one.

Over the years I've worked at capturing images of this seconding process and I've probably got hundreds of them. I've picked out a few random good ones to feature over the next few days.
